19.00% Slugging Percentage

I hit a new Where's George milestone today: a 19.00% slugging percentage (total hits / bills entered). I realize that 19 is a strange milestone to celebrate, but frankly, each additional percentage point is difficult to obtain. Case in point, I'm currently 232 hits off from 20.00%. And while I'm working towards those 232 hits, I need to additionally get a hit for every five bills I enter. Based on the predictions for hits and bill entries I made at the beginning of the year, I expect to have a 20.85% slugging percentage by the end of the year, so it'll likely be July before I hit 20.00%.

Sadly (not really), I didn't get enough hits today compared to the number of bills I entered, so tomorrow I'll be back below 19.00%. Hopefully I'll be back at 19.00% or above within a couple of days.

The Week That Was: Weight Management & Running

The second week of 2013 is down, and I'm starting to see some progress on the weight management front. I logged a descent number of miles also which certainly helped.

Starting off with Weight Management, I did a good job of sticking to my calorie target although I did have my first over calorie target day of the year (Sunday when I knew I was going to be well under for the week). I burned 3,409 calories during the week (a little over 300 less than last week, but that's pretty good considering that I worked this week but not last). Overall, I finished 2,369 calories below my target calories based on a ½ pound a week loss (so I ate back 1,040 of the calories I burned which is roughly ⅓ and better than the ⅔ I ate back last week). Add that deficit to my targeted ½ pound loss, and I mathematically should have lost 1.2 pounds. As I've said before, weight loss doesn't always work mathematically, and here are my real results:

AvgMinMaxLastAvg H20Avg Fat
12/31-01/07180.5179.6181.6180.699.044.8
01/07-01/14179.6178.2180.6180.099.243.4
-0.9-1.4-1.0-0.6+0.2-1.4

My results were pretty close to the mathematical expectation this week, but it was disappointing that my weight this morning was above average and up 1.6 from yesterday (I know large day-to-day fluctuations happen, but it's hard not to be a bit sad when the fluctuation is upwards). It's looking like Mondays may be my "heavy day" this year. Nice to see that my average fat poundage continues to decrease.

Moving onto running, I ran fewer miles this past week but completed my longest run of the year. I ran four times which I think will be typical during half-marathon training (although I may only run three times in the weeks I plan to increase the distance of my long run). Here's a look at my mileage for the week:

MTWRFSS
4.763.25 4.60 9.25
Total Mileage: 21.86

I ran a little bit further last week, but I'm happy with the mileage I did. Along with getting back into half-marathon shape, I'd like to make sure I don't burn out or get hurt. And this mileage is ahead of what I needed to stay ahead of my goal of running 800 miles (roughly 16 miles a week). Here's a graphical look at the miles for the week:

Here's a look at my progress towards the 800 mile goal:

PreviousThis Week800 Miles1000 Miles

I've completed 41.51 miles in 2013, and if I keep up that pace (I won't), I'll end the year with 1165 miles: well above my goal. I expect that my pace will continue to surpass quadruple digits until after the Shamrock'n Half Marathon.

My Where's George Week in Review: 01/06/13 - 01/12/13

My Where's George Week in Review: 01/06/13 - 01/12/13

In the past week, I got 36 hits in 8 States [AZ3, CA26, FL, NV2, OR, PA, TX, WA]. Of those hits, 1 was the 3rd hit on the bill, 4 were the 2nd hit on the bill, and the rest (31) were the initial hit on the bill. Below is a calendar view of the hits throughout the week:

I came into the week with a 2 day hit streak. I got a hit on every day of this week which extended to the streak to 9 days.

Of the 8 States in which I received hits this past week, 4 were the first hit for that State in 2013: NV, PA, TX, WA. Overall I've received hits in 11 States in 2013. Here's how that stands towards my goal of 46 States hit:

Additionally in the past week I received my first hit in 2 counties bringing my total of counties hit to 488. The newly hit counties were Saint Lucie FL, Monroe PA. I set a goal of 98 new counties hit in 2013, and here's a look at my progress towards that goal:

Of the bills hit in the past week, the longest active bill from the bunch was re-entered 3 Years 188 Days 21 Hours 45 Minutes after I originally entered it. That bill is now 15th on my all-time longest active list.

I made predictions regarding bill entries and hits and new bills with hits for 2013. Here's a look at how I'm doing towards those predictions:

At the current rate I'm entering bills in 2013, I'll end up with 6327 bills entered. To hit my goal of 6000 entries, I'll need to just average 114.9 bills per week for the rest of the year.

Looking at my goal of increasing the percentage that $1s make up of my entries by 1% (started the year at 87.63% so the goal is 88.63%), my percentage is now 87.66% [+0.02%].

The Week That Was: Weight Management & Running

The first week of 2013 is in the books. In order to keep myself focused on hitting my goals regarding weight management and running, I've decided to post a weekly review on Mondays with how the previous week went.

Starting off with Weight Management, I did a good job of sticking to my calorie target. This year I'm targeting a loss of a ½ pound a week (which equates to a target of 250 calories below maintenance calories). I do get credit for exercise calories burned, and last week was a whopper as I burned off 3,723 calories. I ended the week 1,290 calories below target (meaning I ate back 2,433 of the calories I burned). Add that the my expected ½ pound loss, and mathematically I should have lost 0.9 pounds.

Sadly, actual weight loss doesn't follow mathematics, and I ended up averaging a higher weight over this past week than the previous. Looking at the tabular results:

AvgMinMaxLastH20Fat
12/24-12/31179.9178.8181.0180.098.045.4
12/31-01/07180.5179.6181.6180.699.044.8
+0.6+0.8+0.6+0.6+1.0-0.6

It's hard to argue against saying that I'm 0.6 pounds heavier. However, if I look at my average water and fat weights, the numbers says that I've been carrying an extra pound of water over this past week while averaging 0.6 pounds less of fat. Although I don't completely trust the water and fat percentage numbers from my scale, I wouldn't argue with the thought that I've been carrying extra water as I returned to running this past week after resting my Achilles injury.

Speaking of running, I had a much better week in that regard. I ran four times in the past week adding mileage to each run to build back up to my target of 8 miles minimum for my long run. Here's a look at my mileage for the week:

MTWRFSS
3.604.85 6.50 8.30
Total Mileage: 23.25

I set a goal of running 800 miles which would require about 16 miles a week. I eclipsed that number this week and ran just 1.8 miles less than my all-time week most. Here's a graphical look at the miles for the week:

Miles Ran16 Mile GoalMiles to Max

As for my progress towards my 800 mile goal, here's a chart showing that (keep in mind that the 3.60 miles I ran on Monday were in 2012):

This Week800 Miles1000 Miles

I've completed 19.65 miles in 2013, and if I keep up that pace (I won't), I'll end the year with 1195 miles ran well surpassing my goal. I expect that number will slowly shrink over the next few weeks, but it's nice to be nicely ahead of pace for this goal for now.

My Where's George Week in Review: 12/30/12 - 01/05/13

In the past week, I got 24 hits in 10 States [AR, AZ, CA15, CO, FL, LA, NV, OK, OR, TX]. Of those hits, 1 was the 4th hit on the bill, 6 were the 2nd hit on the bill, and the rest (17) were the initial hit on the bill. Below is a calendar view of the hits throughout the week:

SundayMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturday

I came into the week with a 84 day hit streak. When I didn't get a hit on Thursday that streak ended at 88 days: good for my longest streak all-time. Here's a look at my all-time ten longest hit streaks:

The hit-less day on Thursday was my first for the year. I predicted four or less in 2013, so it certainly doesn't help to get the first one in the first few days of the year. I'm going to have to average hit streaks of 90 days for the rest of the year to meet that prediction.

Of the 10 States in which I received hits this past week, 7 were the first hit for that State in 2013: AR, AZ, CA, FL, LA, OK, OR. Overall I've received hits in 7 States in 2013. Here's how that stands towards my goal of 46 States hit:

Additionally in the past week I received my first hit in 3 counties bringing my total of counties hit to 486. The newly hit counties were Clark AR, Escambia FL, Cherokee OK. I set a goal of 98 new counties hit in 2013, and here's a look at my progress towards that goal:

I surpassed the rate needed for bill entries over this past week but came up short on the hit side. I'm not surprised by either of those things and do expect my entry rate to be lower moving forward (I did extra shopping this past week). At the current rate I'm entering bills in 2013, I'll end up with 7811 bills entered. To hit my goal of 6000 entries, I'll need to just average 114.6 bills per week for the rest of the year.

Looking at my goal of increasing the percentage that $1s make up of my entries by 1% (started the year at 87.64% so the goal is 88.64%), my percentage is now 87.63% [-0.01%]. I entered some additional fives, tens, and twenties for the above mentioned shopping trip, I expect to make up ground in the next few weeks.

I didn't insert any bills over the past week just to see how the year would start off. I'll be starting the insertion process this upcoming week (although I haven't picked up my Dallas bills yet, so "K" will continue to fall behind). I find it interesting that four of the eleven are ahead without inserts. I don't expect that to continue to be true throughout the year.

One of the more interesting things about Where's George for me is out-of-State hits. Of particular interest are multi-hit bills where each entry was in a different State. I got one such new 2 hit/3 State bill this past week: California -> Missouri -> Oregon

Additionally it's fun to find bills with previous entries (these bills are known as "Wilds"). I found two Wilds in the past week (quite unusual as I tend to find one Wild for roughly every 500 bills I enter): this One that started in Pollock Pines, CA and this Ten from Rodeo, CA.

Other than the hit-less day on Thursday, it was a pretty good start to 2013. The ten hit day on Wednesday was really awesome.

Where's George Goals/Predictions/Wishes for 2013

Another year brings about another set of goals, predictions, and wishes in my nerdy obsession of Where's George. Last year I split these into three different posts, but for this year I've recombined them. I think last year I got a bit broad in each category and picked some things that really weren't that interesting as the year played out. My plan is for this year's items to all be things that I'll still be interested in at the end of the year.

Starting off with my projection for bill entries. I predicted 5000 entries in 2012 and ended up entering 6200, so I was quite a bit off. I think 5000 is a more reasonable number, but based off of the past year, I think I'm going to predict 6000 for 2013. Using that information, I ran my program from last year for predicting hits based on past results and historical entries plus expected entering rate. The program predicted 1514 hits in 2013. I received 1531 hits in 2012 and getting less hits in 2013 doesn't seem right. So I reran the program for last year based on the actual amount of entries, and it predicted I would have gotten 1364 hits. So my actual amount of hits was 12.2% more. Expecting that the program would be the same percentage off, and adjusted amount of hits for 2013 is 1700 for a total of 6029. If that happens, my slugging percentage will be 20.85% (up from the current value of 18.89%). Using my Excel spreadsheet for predicting which of those hits would be the initial hits on a bill, I expect to have 1370 additional bills with hits for 5074 overall. That would result in a hit rate of 17.55% (up from the current value of 16.16%).

Based on the 1700 hits, I'd expect to average 4.6 hits/day. That information can be used to find the odds of getting a hit in any particular minute which can then be used to predict the odds of a hit-less day. Which in this case is just under 1% meaning I should only have 3-4 hit-less days in 2013 (I had 9 in 2012 after predicting no more than 13). So I'll predict 4 or less hit-less days and a hit streak of at least 100 days entirely in 2013 (so my 86 day hit streak coming into the year doesn't count).

I have a number of goals/predictions in regards to bingos. Starting off with 50 State bingo, I just need West Virginia, and I predict that I will get a hit in WV in 2013. As for California county bingo, I have hits in 55 of the 58 counties. I don't really believe it, but I predict that I'll get the final 3 counties. In 2012, I got hits in 44 States (well 43 plus the District of Columbia). For 2013, I would expect to do slightly better and thus predict 46. As for total counties hit, I currently have hits in 483. Based on the prediction of 1700 hits in 2013 plus my declining rate of getting new counties, I project 98 new counties in 2013 for a total of 581.

As for the bill entries, once again I'd like to increase the overall percentage ones make of my entries. Targeting increasing that percentage by 1% worked well in 2012, so I'll set the same goal in 2013. My current percentage is 87.64% so my goal for the end of 2013 is 88.64% this would require 92.5% of my entries in 2013 to be ones. In 2012, 91.25% of my entries were ones, so this may end up being a bit of a stretch goal. As for my FRB insertion experiment from last year where I inserted bills from my bottom 6 FRBs in an effort to increase their overall percentage of my bills entered, I plan to continue that effort in 2013 but in a different manner. In 2013, I plan to increase each of the non-San Francisco FRBs. In an attempt to get a second FRB to double digits percentage-wise of my entries, I'm going to target increasing my Atlanta (my second highest at 9.1%) percentage by 0.5%. For the six FRBs I increased in 2012, I'm going to target 0.1%. The others I will target increasing by 0.2%. Unlike last year where I blindly inserted a large number of bills, this year I will only insert in bills as needed to meet the targets.

Along with the above predictions and goals, I do have a few wishes. First, I would like to get my first 5 hit bill. I currently have 6 four hit bills, and it'd be nice to see one of those bills get another hit. Second, I would like to get my first 5+ year active bill. My longest active bill was last hit 4 Years 200 Days 22 Minutes after I entered it. I look forward to that bill getting replaced at the top. My third wish is to break my current record for most hits in a month (160: May 2012). My second best month had 139 hits, so I really haven't gotten close to 160 since. In order to hit 1700 hits in 2013, I'd have to average 142 hits per month. So at a minimum, I'll have to set a new second best at worst.

My 2012 Where's George End of Year Review

With 2012 now over, it's time to take a look at how I did in regards to my Where's George Predictions, Goals, and Wishes for 2012. Starting off I'll take a look at my normal weekly stats (but for just the final two days of the year).

In the last two days of 2012, I received 4 hits in 4 States [CA, CO, NV, TX]. Throughout the year I received hits in 44 States. Overall I have hits in 49 States missing just West Virginia (my prediction of completing 50 State bingo didn't come through). No new counties means I ended the year with hits in 483 counties.

Of those 4 hits, 1 was the 4th hit on the bill, 1 was the 2nd hit on the bill, and the rest (2) were the initial hit on the bill. I didn't get a 5 hit bill during the year, so that wish didn't come true.

SundayMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturday

13?????

Two more days with hits extends my current hit streak to 86 days. The hit on Sunday came after 8 PM, and I had already written off my streak extending. I had previously completed my prediction of a 80+ day hit streak earlier in the year, and this current streak has extended beyond that one. All in all, I ended up with 9 hit-less days in 2012 (better than the prediction of 13). 3 of those hit-less days were within a week in October.

Looking at how my actuals compared to my predictions regarding bill entries and hits ended, I surpassed all three numbers by quite a bit. However, a lot of the exceeding values are due to an underestimation of the number of bills entered:

Based on the goal of 5000 bill entries, here's how I did towards my bill entry goals. Starting off with my goal of increasing the percentage that $1s make up of my entries by 1% (started the year at 86.29% so the goal is 87.29%), my percentage ended at 87.64% [+1.35%] which more than completed my goal:

As for the goal of having series 2009 pass series 2003A in number of entries, series 2009 easily surpassed 2003A and had a huge lead by the end of the year:

And for my goal of decreasing San Francisco "L" FRB entries below 50.0% while increasing Boston "A", Cleveland "D", St Louis "H", Philadelphia "C", Minneapolis "I", and Kansas City "J", I met the goal but went a bit overboard in the process inserting ~200 bills for each of the six FRBs I wanted to increase.

As for the other predictions, goals, and wishes that I haven't covered yet, here's how they ended up:

  • California County Bingo: An Additional County Hit

I had hits in 52 of the 58 California counties coming into the year. I expected to just get one more in 2012, but ended up adding three to end the year with 55.

  • FRB Bingos: 17 Additional Completed

I started the year with 40 and expected to have 57 by the end of the year. Instead, I ended with 74 aided by the extra hits that I got compared to predicted.

  • National Rank by George Score: Under 1000

I started the year around 1050. In November and December, the highest my rank got was 792 and at best I was as low as 732. This goal turned out to be a bit easier than expected.

  • Caifornia State Rank by George Score: 75 or Better

I started the year in the lower 90s/upper 80s. In November and December, the highest my rank got was 66 and at best I was as low as 55. This goal also turned out to be easier than expected.

  • Zip Codes with 25+ Bills Entered: 30

I started the year with 22 and wanted to add an additional 8 zip codes to the list. I ended the year with 28. I probably could have met this goal, but midway through the year, I lost interest with this goal.

  • New Record Month for Hits

My record coming into the year was 124 hits in October of 2011. I set new records four times in 2012: January (126), March (129), April (139), and May (160).

  • Surpass 500 2006 L-L $1 Entries

I started the year with 481 and ended with 522 completing this wish.

  • Surpass 400 Entries with one 2009 FRB/Block Combo and 300 with Another

I ended up with four different 2009 combos with greater than 300 entries: LG (398), LB (365), LF (353), and LK (332). LG was very close to 400 and narrowly missed completing this wish.

  • Complete Non-Star Portions of Series 2003A and 2006 $1 Bingo

This turned out to be a very unrealistic wish. I needed 6 2003A and 11 2006 combos to complete the non-star portions. I got none of the 2003A combos but I did get 8 of the 2006 combos (plus two of the star combos that I didn't previously have) to fall 9 spots short overall.

  • A 4+ Year Active Bill

My longest active bill coming into the year was active for 3 Years, 251 Days, 19 Hours, and 40 Minutes. I ended up with five 4+ year active bills in 2012 with the longest out there for 4 Years, 200 Days, and 22 Minutes.

All in all it was a fantastic year for me for Georging. Can't wait to see what 2013 brings!
